Australia delivered that message to the world on Saturday.

"We're very proud to represent these colors and represent them the right way and we're doing it as a team, as a group, as best mates".

"It's a building block for us". "Lesson learned for us".

The Americans won the bronze medal game of that tournament, and then were unbeaten through the cycles for the 2007 FIBA Americas, 2008 Olympics, 2010 World Cup, 2012 Olympics, 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Regardless of the pending results, the FIBA World Cup should be very entertaining to watch, and Team USA in particular will hold a lot of interest both for Celtics fans and for National Basketball Association fans at large curious as to how the Celtics' new core will work together.

Add all that up, and it was a 78-game winning streak for the USA - the longest in programme history. The teams have squared off 26 times since 1964 but Australia have never been triumphant.

"Nobody wins forever", Popovich said. "So it's not surprising".

"We've only been playing together for a little while, and this was a good lesson for us", Smart told reporters in Melbourne.

The defeat snapped a 78-game winning streak for Team USA in worldwide competition, and provided further evidence that this talented but mostly superstar-lacking national team will not have an easy path to the gold medal when the World Cup begins in China next weekend.

Coach Gregg Popovich hopes the defeat of Team USA in Melbourne will be a wake-up call for his team before the upcoming FIBA World Cup.

"It's probably most important", the long-terms San Antonio Spurs coach said.

"In a odd sort of way, I'm happy for him", Popovich said.

It still managed to keep All-Stars like Boston Celtics point guard Kemba Walker, Utah Jazz shooting guard Donovan Mitchell and Milwaukee Bucks small forward Khris Middleton, but that group doesn't look so unbeatable without the likes of James Harden or Anthony Davis.
