Penn State football landed at No. 15 in the first AP Top 25 poll of the 2019 college football season.

The Tigers had not been preseason No. 1 in either the AP or USA TODAY Coaches rankings going into the 2019 season but were comfortable top vote-getters in each this month. They must believe in Scott Frost and his squad, who won four of their last six previous year. Clemson is ranked No. 1 (1,540 points), Alabama is No. 2 (1,496) and Georgia is No. 3 (1,403). Michigan was ranked No. 7 while Michigan State was No. 20 in the first Coaches Poll, which was released on August 1.

Eastern Washington was voted third by the coaches in the preseason poll with 588 points and two first-place votes. The Tide is among four SEC teams ranked in the top ten. Oklahoma State and West Virginia received votes.

James Franklin's program is one of seven Big Ten teams listed in the preseason AP Top 25 poll. The Eagles are hot off an NCAA Division I Football Championship game appearance and a 12-3 overall record. The Cougars received three points in the preseason coaches poll, which equates to the No. 49 overall spot. The only other time the Cyclones were ranked was in 1978, when they were No. 20 entering the season.
