Jeffrey Epstein Wasn't 'Closely Monitored' Before Death

Jeffrey Epstein is dead but it could take years to unravel his vast estate

CNN reporter Jake Tapper blasted President Donald Trump on Sunday after the President retweeted a baseless conspiracy theory about accused child molester Jeffrey Epstein's apparent suicide.

But in the wake of Epstein's apparent suicide in a Lower Manhattan lockup, the wannabe witnesses may wind up getting prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, sources said.

The Times spoke to the official on the condition of anonymity.

Before he took his own life, Epstein has been taken off suicide watch, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press.

Prosecutors may target cronies who were set to testify against Jeffrey Epstein before his death - as the FBI investigates new claims by more than 200 women who say they were sexually assaulted by the wealthy pedophile, law-enforcement officials said Sunday.

Speculation surrounding Saturday's death of convicted sex offender and billionaire Jeffrey Epstein in an apparent suicide in a United States federal prison was rife on Sunday, with Epstein's ties to famous and powerful people fueling a number of conspiracy theories. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

After Epstein was placed on suicide watch when he was found with marks on his neck on July 23, daily psychological assessments were conducted on him, according to a source familiar with the matter. "How does that happen #JefferyEpstein had information on Bill Clinton & now he's dead".

In a statement, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman called Epstein's death "disturbing" and said his office was "deeply aware" it could "present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein's many victims their day in court".

How major U.S. stock indexes fared Wednesday
The Nasdaq composite, which is heavily weighted with technology stocks, vaulted 176.33 points, or 2.2%, to 8,039.16. Global Investors, told ABC News, referring to larger-than-expected rate cuts by India, Thailand and New Zealand.

Epstein, 66, had been denied bail and faced up to 45 years behind bars on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges unsealed last month. He had pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial.

The Southern District of New York's investigation into Epstein's alleged conduct is ongoing after his death, according to Geoffrey Berman, the USA attorney overseeing that office. He noted in a statement Saturday that the indictment against Epstein includes a conspiracy charge, suggesting others could face charges in the case.

Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Oversight Subcommittee, was highly critical of the Justice Department and the Bureau of Prisons in a letter addressed to Barr on Saturday, demanding answers to questions surrounding Epstein's death. "Being responsible for Epstein's custody and prosecution, the Department of Justice should not have allowed this to happen".

On Friday, more than 2,000 pages of documents were released related to a since-settled lawsuit against Epstein's ex-girlfriend by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers.

Epstein's arrest drew national attention, particularly focusing on a deal that allowed Epstein to plead guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution in Florida and avoid more serious federal charges.

Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) on August 10 called for the House Committee on Oversight and Reform to "begin its investigation" into why Epstein got a lenient plea deal in 2008 when he was sentenced to 13 months and was allowed to work from his Palm Beach office. Sisak reported from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Balsamo from Savannah, Georgia.
