She said they appeared to be too strong for firefighters to extinguish at one point.

Emergency services were called to 450 Woodman Avenue near Queens Avenue, east of the downtown core, at 10:37 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators believe the vehicle hit a natural gas line, causing the explosion.

A vehicle has crashed into a home in London, Ontario, causing a gas line explosion that set multiple buildings on fire, local officials and witnesses say.

Seven people, including four firefighters, two police officers and one citizen were transported to the hospital.

Police are continuing their efforts in making sure all houses are evacuated and several buses are there for any occupants to go on. Ten were on Woodman St. and two on Charlotte St., the city said.

Seven homes were "severely impacted" by the fire, a city spokeswoman said.

Keara-Lynne Douglas, who lives nearby, described the flames engulfing homes.

Former City Councillor Roger Caranci was at the scene and said there was "debris everywhere" after the explosion. The blast was felt and heard across parts of London, residents said, and a plume of smoke was billowing from the scene.

A community centre was opened for displaced residents and other residents have dropped off food and water, he said.

"We thought it was a bomb blowing off", another person in the neighbourhood said after a fireball shot up into the night sky. "Everyone is really coming together to put up some donations and things that people will need because some of these people have lost everything".

Sterling added that she expects the number of calls to increase after residents return to their homes and are able to better assess whether their pets are missing.
