Music composer Khayyam dies at 92

Mumbai: Veteran music director-composer Mohammed Zahur Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, passed away late on Monday of cardiac arrest. The veteran music composer was struggling with lung infection and was admitted to the ICU on July 28th.

"He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses", PTI quoted an unidentified family friend as saying. He breathed his last at Sujoy Hospital, Juhu, at 9:30 PM on today. Khayyam is survived by his singer wife Jagjit Kaur, reports news agency IANS. The well - known Bollywood music composer who was known for composing some iconic pieces for the likes of Umrao Jaan and Kabhie Kabhie, was 92.

He was honoured with the National Award, and a Filmfare Award, besides several other honours for his melodious music in Umrao Jaan, starring Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah and Farooque Sheikh.

Apart from films, the composer will also be remembered for his non-film songs like Paaon padun tore shyam, Ghazab kiya tere vaade pe aitbaar kiya, to name a few. He had also composed music for actress Meena Kumari's album I Write, I Recite.

The last rites of Mohammed Zahur Hashmi will be performed on Tuesday.
