That person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

"The federal government failed to bring Jeffrey Epstein to justice", Sasse wrote in a letter to the DOJ, his second memo to the agency this week.

A French child protection group stepped up pressure on Tuesday for prosecutors to open an investigation into the activities in France of Jeffrey Epstein, the US financier found dead in an apparent suicide while being held on sex-trafficking charges.

Two prison guards have been suspended and a warden reassigned after Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide at the Metropolitan Correctional Center over the weekend.

While the exact manner of Epstein's death has not been officially announced, another person familiar with operations at the jail said the financier was discovered in his cell with a bedsheet around his neck.

He added: "We will get to the bottom of what happened and there will be accountability".

Barr appointed James Petrucci, who has been running a federal prison in nearby Otisville, New York, as the facility's new acting warden.

The two guards assigned to check on Epstein left him alone for several hours, and one of them was not a correctional officer, according to the AP.

Attorney General William Barr has expressed outrage that Epstein was able to take his own life Saturday while under the care of the federal Bureau of Prisons while the inmate was facing sex trafficking charges.

President Trump believes it is completely fine that he, as President of the United States, retweeted a conspiracy theory about a link between former President Bill Clinton and the death of billionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. An autopsy was performed Sunday, but New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said investigators were awaiting further information. Prosecutors said he sexually abused dozens of young girls in his NY and Florida residences between 2002 and 2005, allegations that could have landed him behind bars for 45 years.

Barr has cited "serious irregularities" at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., on Tuesday urged Attorney General William Barr to "rip up" a 2008 non-prosecution agreement Jeffrey Epstein made with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Florida that offered immunity to him, four named co-conspirators, and "any potential conspirators" from federal charges. This revelation follows reports of staffing shortages within the facility.

According to police reports, Federal Bureau of Investigation records and court documents, Epstein had a team of recruiters and other assistants who knew of his penchant for girls and lined up victims for him.
