An explosion in County Fermanagh created to murder security force personnel has been met with widespread outrage from Northern Ireland's political representatives.

PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Martin says the detonation of an explosive device in Fermanagh on Monday morning was a "deliberate" attempt to murder police and anti-terrorism officers attending the scene.

Security forces had originally gone to the site to investigate a hoax device, and were searching the area when the device detonated in Wattlebridge.

Police and bomb disposal experts had been working in the area of Newtownbutler over the weekend since receiving an initial report about a suspect device on Saturday.

Earlier he said that police had initially been told a device had been left on the Wattlebridge Road, however, the explosion occurred on the main A3 Cavan Road.

"They are reckless and indiscriminate, and this morning's attack had the potential to kill anyone in the immediate vicinity".

Chief Constable Simon Byrne called it sinister.

The Irish Times reports that given the location of the attack investigators will likely "focus on the possibility the bombers were dissidents republicans who fled south".

Sinn Fein MP Ms Gildernew said: 'This morning's bomb attack in Wattle Bridge was totally wrong.

"Once again, we are greatly relieved and thankful that no one has been injured in what was a carefully planned terrorist effort", he said.

"This was a clear attempt to kill".

Alliance MLA and Policing Board member John Blair said he is thankful we are not dealing with serious tragedy today, and urged those behind attempts to murder police to cease.

"Today we have seen another example of the intent dissident republicans have as they attempted to murder police officers and army personnel in Co Fermanagh".

Meanwhile, SDLP Fermanagh Councillor Adam Gannon said that the explosion was created to kill and those responsible must be caught.

"I strongly condemn these actions and express my honest thanks to both the Officers and Army personnel for their work in securing the area".

He called on anyone with information to provide it to the PSNI.

There used to be a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, but all the checkpoints and customs houses along the border were dismantled after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, which has ensured decades-long peace and stability on the island of Ireland since then.

"It is a considerable relief that no PSNI officers were seriously injured or killed when this bomb went off".
