Insomniac Games - the developer behind the Ratchet & Clank series as well as Marvel's Spider-Man - has long maintained a close relationship with Sony, but the studio has always valued its independence.

Founded in 1994, Insomniac Games is based in Burbank, Calif., and Durham, N.C. The studio's other best-selling titles for PlayStation include "Spryo the Dragon" and "Resistance".

With that in mind, Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 seems all but guaranteed now. Insomniac Games' logo, third from the left, is now an official part of the Sony Interactive Entertainment family.

Massive news in the gaming world just landed with Sony revealing that they have acquired Insomniac Games, a move that will keep their games exclusive to Sony platforms. As for exclusivity, this doesn't change all that much as Insomniac has mostly made games for Sony platforms. Don't expect Spider-Man on Xbox One anytime soon.

Spider-Man, a PS4 exclusive, was the studio's most successful game, selling 13.2 million copies according to a Sony press release today. Financial terms of this transaction including the acquisition cost are not disclosed due to contractual commitments. "We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family". "Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people's lives", Insomniac CEO Ted Price wrote in a blog post Monday.
