Granted, there are still plenty of other Star Wars comics that will still be ongoing, including tie-ins to the new movie, the upcoming Jedi: Fallen Order video game, and spin-offs focusing on characters like Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra. We also caught a glimpse of a hundred Star Destroyers.

There was a very brief amount of new footage shown (including Rey in a dark hood, wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber???) but it has not surfaced online yet.

The epic poster features Rey and Kylo locked in lightsaber battle on top of a precarious piece of debris. C-3PO with red eyes. A gang of heroes approaching a bustling desert city.

Abrams noted that he wasn't originally meant to direct the final film, but was inspired by something Fisher wrote about the future Star Wars project in her book The Princess Diarist, before she passed away.

But given the timing of The Rise of Skywalker's impending release, perhaps the reason is twofold, and a chance to not just put a new #1 on shelves, but completely re-orient the main Star Wars series' story and setting.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek) returning to direct the ninth and final installment of the Skywalker saga. By the time she wrote it and when she died, she'd only worked with Abrams once. So, when a new Star Wars poster is revealed it is a pretty big deal amongst fans.

The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release December 20, 2019.
