"If you want to see a biopic without his music or the families blessing, that's up to the audience". The film is set to chronicle the young David Bowie's first visit to the United States in 1971, which was around the time he was developing the album Hunky Dory, with the trip inspiring his invention of one of his most famous creations - his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

South African actor Flynn is front man of Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit and has previously starred in Channel 4's Lovesick and Amazon Studio's adaptation of Vanity Fair, and was announced to play Bowie in the biopic earlier this year.

Salon Pictures has unveiled a first look image of Johnny Flynn as David Bowie in its upcoming feature Stardust.

"I'm not saying this movie is not happening". The late icon's son, Duncan Jones, said in a series of tweets that he's "pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for any biopic".

The image of Flynn bares a striking resemblance to Bowie in 1971 when the film is set, specifically focusing on a turning point in his life during his first trip to the USA when he was inspired to develop the Ziggy Stardust alter ego that would inspire one of his best albums.

Not so, he insisted. "I hate to break it to anybody, but we've known the status regarding his feet", Gruden said. The league then put that helmet model through testing and determined that it is not approved for use.

Despite this, do not expect many of Bowie's tracks making it into the film, as the film will not be reliant on Bowie's music and will use instead period music songs that the musician covered, rather than his original songs. I don't like when they sell fiction as fact, and I hate when they take an icon I know and love and tell lies for the goal of a "good story". I'm saying that as it stands, this movie won't have any of Dad's music in it, and I can't imagine that changing.

Gabriel Range directed the film from a screenplay by Christopher Bell.

Produced by Paul Van Carter and Nick Taussig of Salon Pictures, the film is being sold globally by Film Constellation.

At that point in his career, David had already acquired a following as a rock "n" roll, teen idol and created a new identity for Space Oddity in 1969.

Jena Malone from The Hunger Games franchise will star as David's first wife Mary Angela "Angie" Barnett.
