Tiger not ruling out playing at Presidents Cup

As the captain of this year's team that will head to Royal Melbourne in December for the 13 Presidents Cup, Woods has already pressed his team to play during the fall schedule of the upcoming 2019-20 wraparound season to be sharp when the matches roll along.

Captain's picks will be made in early November and Woods said he wanted to see potential wildcards playing regular golf.

Woods has made it clear that the four picks will be a consensus of his assistants and eight qualifiers, though "ultimately it's going to be my call".

"It was disappointing not to make it (to East Lake this year), just the fact that last year culminated in a great win, and it turned into what happened, I'm sure, at Augusta, because I was able to prove to myself that I could win again".

"It's something that I try to reinforce to the guys, that it is important to be solid, be fresh, and to be sharp because we're going overseas and we're playing against an wonderful team, and it's on their soil". "We'll be going through the whole process of having open communication with our top eight guys and my vice captains".

The eight automatic qualifiers are Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and Matt Kuchar.

Last month, US captain Tiger Woods named Fred Couples, Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker as three of his four assistants. Woods is a captain for the first time and eventually will decide whether to be the first playing captain of the Presidents Cup since Hale Irwin in 1994.

He failed to advance to the season-ending Tour Championship this week and is unlikely to play competitive golf for two months.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will take place at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from December 9-15.

Three Australian golfers have secured global team spots for December's Presidents Cup contest in Melbourne but former world No.1 Jason Day is not among them.

The arrangement seemed mutually agreeable until earlier this year, when Braun's label Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine. Watch this space for Swift's big Back To The Future act - and the inevitable chart resurgence of her older tunes.

The top four players in the worldwide standings - Marc Leishman, Louis Oosthuizen, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama - have a combined 17 appearances in the Presidents Cup and are flanked by four newcomers to the event in Abraham Ancer, Haotong Li, Cameron Smith and C.T. Pan.

The most notable player on the worldwide side in need of a captain's pick by Els is former world No. 1 Jason Day, who finished ninth in the points.

"It has to do with a lot of my competitions I'm going to have down here".

But Woods refused to comment when asked if there was pressure to pick himself and give this year's Cup a boost. He hopes most of his team will play in the Hero World Challenge he hosts in the Bahamas the week prior before heading to Melbourne to further secure comradery and form.

The American team has won 10 of the 12 total editions of the Presidents Cup.

"Practising; playing and staying sharp (is key)", Woods said. The guys knew they had to play well this season and they showed it.

But Woods won't allow complacency.

"Ernie is really bringing some good energy and effort to this team and there are definitely some new faces on board so maybe this is the start of young blood", Scott said. Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Dustin Johnson each played on the 2011 USA team that was victorious at Royal Melbourne.

Mickelson plans to play the Safeway Open in Napa at the end of September (which his management company runs) and the CJ Cup in South Korea, and said he might add a tournament depending on how he plays. "So that's something that I've told my players".
