Democratic candidates debate fixes for US education

Biden took on the most fire, but parried it and, as front-runner, benefits the most from a no-decision. Sen.

But nine months into their nomination fight, divided Democrats have yet to answer fundamental questions about who or what the party stands for beyond simply opposing Trump.

Instead of signing up to back the Sanders-authored plan, like a majority of the Democrat field, Biden has proposed expanding Obamacare through a public option.

From the spin room in at Texas Southern University in Houston on Thursday, Biden campaign officials briefed reporters after what they called a "stellar night" and "forceful, passionate performance" from the former vice president.

"Until we attack the systemic problems, we can't get gun reform in this country", Warren said, moments before Sanders said he did not support eliminating the filibuster.

The three leading Democratic presidential candidates clashed over health care, immigration and President Barack Obama's legacy on Thursday in a fierce debate that pitted an aggressive Joe Biden against liberal rivals Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

Another exchange between Biden and Sanders brought the discussion to the ongoing toll of health care costs in the US, with the senator from Vermont citing a statistic that 500,000 Americans declare bankruptcy each year because of medical costs, bringing up cancer while making the point. Beto O'Rourke and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro. "I mean, I can't believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in, and now you're saying they don't have to buy- you're forgetting that", he said.

Ms Barbera said it was a neighbour who reported the sunken auto and was not aware of reports that Google Maps had been used. They sent the remains and the vehicle to the Medical Examiner's Office, which was able to make a positive I.D. on Tuesday.

Castro also seemed to allude to speculation about Biden's mental acuity during an exchange about health care.

But Warren's strategy of focusing exclusively on her ideas, and not engaging with other candidates, comes with a risk.

Sen. Kamala Harris: "Donald Trump's Department of Justice is trying to get rid of the Affordable Care Act".

"They know him, they know his record, they know he's been there for them", she said. "But let's focus on the end goal". She would not - at the moderator's prompting - say that middle class Americans' taxes would go up, but she defended her plan. "I want to hear tonight how that happened". "It's original, I'll give you that", Buttigieg said.

Biden's strongest challengers will flank him on stage, but are politically to his left: Sens. "If you lose your job, for instance, his health care plan would not automatically enroll you, you would have to opt in", Castro continued.

The 44-year-old Texan appeared to touch on concerns about Biden's age when he accused the former vice president of forgetting a detail about his own health care plan.
