Bolton had been against the peace talks.

The national security adviser, no fan of Moscow, sought to draw a distinction between Trump's musings and what might be produced by the National Security Council or the Defense Department. Bolton insisted that he attempted to resign before Trump's announcement.

Bolton often agreed with Trump and regularly praised him on Fox News before getting the job.

He had been widely cheered by Israel's right-wing government, which had pushed the administration to abandon the nuclear deal and take a more hawkish stance toward Iran.

"I don't think that any leader around the world should make any assumption that because some one of us departs that the president Trump's foreign policy will change in a material way", he said.

Last month Trump suggested China should "humanely" settle the problem in Hong Kong before a trade deal is reached with Washington. It should be pointed out "Wong" is anxious about what might happen if Hong Kong approves policies which go against USA interests.

Bolton was too controversial to be voted on by the Senate to be United Nations Ambassador for President George W. Bush and had to be recess appointed.

Coats was viewed as apolitical and enjoyed bipartisan support, but did not see eye to eye with Trump on a range of issues and at times appears to have been kept in the dark by his administration.

Bolton joins a stack of senior officials to have come and gone during the Republican businessman's tumultuous first term in office.

Bolton is a notorious hawk, especially in the middle east. He sometimes been at odds with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, one of Mr Trump's main loyalists.

Bolton was then asked whether the administration actually would concede the claims made by Russian Federation based on its use of force. On Friday, the president's adviser on North Korea said negotiations have been stalled for months.

Shortly after the White House announced a briefing with Pompeo, Mnuchin and John Bolton, the president announced Bolton was out as national security adviser.

Flynn's replacement, McMaster, also a lieutenant general, lasted barely a year.
