First human case of West Nile virus found in Chatham County

Mosquito samples collected in Aquebogue and Jamesport in late last month tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health.

The individual is under the age of 40 and was not hospitalized, according to a release from the health department.

The Health Department typically sees an average of four West Nile cases each year; however, in 2018, they investigated a total of 42 cases. West Nile is the most common mosquito-born disease in the USA, according to the health department. Most infections occur in Nebraska from June through September. "We are urging the public to use precautions against mosquito bites while attending outdoor events", said Hector Gomez, Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department administrator.
