Former Detroit sportscaster Fred McLeod dies at 67

Longtime Cleveland Cavaliers play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod died Monday evening, and LeBron James was one of the first to express his grief.

Details of McLeod's passing have not been released at this time.

A popular play-by-play man because of his fervor and his rapport with commentator and former Cavs guard Austin Carr, McLeod did play-by play of the Cavs for 15 years following a long stint with the Pistons.

A native of Strongsville, OH, McLeod was 57 and had spent almost four decades in broadcasting.

McLeod was preparing for his 14th straight year as the Cavs announcer on Fox Sports Ohio.

An Ohio native, McLeod served as the Cavaliers television play-by-play announcer on FOX Sports Ohio since the 2006 season. Serving as a Pistons broadcaster from 1984-2006, Fred touched the lives of many colleagues, players, and fans through his kindness, his enthusiasm for the team, his storytelling and his passion for the game of basketball. In addition to his play-by-play duties, Fred also served as the Cavaliers' Executive Producer for Multimedia, providing fans behind-the-scenes access on Cavs.com, Cavs HQ, Twitter and Facebook with daily updates and interviews during the season. He recently celebrated his 36th season in broadcasting.

"The entire Detroit Lions organization extends its heartfelt sympathies and condolences to his wife, Beth, his family and members of the TV broadcast community he helped mentor for more than four decades".
