Government will propose banning flavors used in e-cigarettes

US public health officials are investigating hundreds of cases of vaping-related lung illnesses

In an effort to curb teen vaping, President Trump on Wednesday said his administration is looking to ban all non-tobacco flavored e-cigarette products.

On Wednesday, federal health officials briefed President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump about the disease, which the CDC says has left six people dead and more than 450 people sick.

No single device, ingredient or additive has been identified, though many cases involve marijuana vaping devices. He noted if the FDA sees children are still being attracted to e-cigarettes or if e-cigarettes are being marketed to children, the FDA could take further action.

The proposed ban comes as cases of vaping-related lung illnesses have surged in recent weeks. According to preliminary findings from the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than a quarter of high school students were current e-cig users in 2019, and the majority of youth e-cig users prefer fruit and mint flavored products. Agency officials instead said they were studying if flavors could help smokers quit traditional cigarettes.

Amazon will also begin hiring tens of thousands of temporary workers in the coming weeks in preparation of the holiday season. And the company is moving into more industries, including health care and advertising.

MI became the first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes earlier this month, while San Francisco in June took a step to curb teen vaping addiction by banning the sales of the devices.

E-cigarette vapor contains tiny particles that carry flavorings. Its CEO, Gary Reedy, released a statement that said his organization will "advocate for a final proposal that includes all flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, cigars, and menthol cigarettes and addresses nicotine addiction to maximize the impact on public health". Government health officials have called the trend an "epidemic", and new statistics due out this fall are expected to show the problem worsening.

No cases of the acute lung illness associated with e-cigarette use have been reported in Canada. And this month MI moved to become the first state to ban flavored electronic cigarettes. But there is virtually no research on the long-term effects of vaping.
