Hong Kong children form chains of protest as economic worries grow

The silent protest came as the Hong Kong government condemned the "illegal behavior of radical protesters" and warned the U.S.to stay out of its affairs.

Activists started fires in the street and vandalised a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station in the main business district of Central on Sunday after thousands rallied peacefully at the US consulate, calling for help in bringing democracy to the special administrative region. The bill proposes sanctions against Hong Kong and Chinese officials found to suppress democracy and human rights in the city, and could also affect Hong Kong's preferential trade status with the U.S.

Dozens of Syracuse University students are studying overseas in Hong Kong while the city experiences historic protests that have grown into a pro-democracy movement.

Organizers of the rally said the Chinese government had violated the Sino-British Joint Declaration and undermined the one country two systems agreement in Hong Kong.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt told MPs in parliament's lower House of Commons, "And we will not issue any further export licenses for crowd control equipment to Hong Kong unless we are satisfied that concerns raised on human rights and fundamental freedoms have been thoroughly addressed", reports HKFP.

Elsewhere, there were some incidents in Kowloon on Sunday night, including in Prince Edward, close to Mong Kok.

The spokesperson said Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor had already announced on September 4 the complete withdrawal of the extradition bill.

Lord Patten was the Governor of Hong Kong between 1992-1997.

Chinese state media on Monday said Hong Kong was an inseparable part of China and any form of secessionism "will be crushed".

The U.S. State Department said in a travel advisory Friday that Beijing has undertaken a propaganda campaign "falsely accusing the United States of fomenting unrest in Hong Kong".

While the bill has been withdrawn, the protests have not ended as demonstrators want Lam to accept four other demands, which include an independent inquiry into police conduct and working toward genuine universal suffrage. It said US citizens and embassy staff were targeted and urged them to exercise increased caution.

The marchers urged US President Donald Trump to "liberate" the territory as they press for more democratic freedom, chanting "Resist Beijing, Liberate Hong Kong" and "Stand with Hong Kong, fight for freedom".

Trump has suggested it's a matter for China to handle, though he also has said that no violence should be used. On Sept. 4, Lam said she would officially withdraw the bill, which was one of the protesters demands, The New York Times reported.

A huge banner that read "Do you trust the Communist Party?"

This comes after Wong was arrested last month on charges of inciting and participating in an unlawful assembly.

Wong said he believes he would be freed on Monday.

Meanwhile, former Umbrella movement leader Joshua Wong was redetained as he tried to board a flight to Germany on Sunday, only to be released later after the judge corrected a mistaken date on his conditions of bail.

A senior USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was monitoring events.

Many protesters, however, said the move was too little, too late.
