Ireland's Rugby World Cup squad officially named
Ireland lock Devin Toner was the surprise omission from Joe Schmidt's World Cup squad on Monday, as Jean Kleyn edged out the experienced Leinster man less than a month after making his global debut.
Kleyn only qualified for Ireland on residency two days before his Test debut, the 29-10 victory over Italy on August 10.
Toner, the 33-year-old Leinster second-rower, has made 60 appearances for Ireland under New Zealand coach Joe Schmidt, more than any other player during his six-year tenure. We went down to 40 players and to go from 40 down to 31 was really hard, but we had a process whereby we looked back through every training, looked through the games.
Ireland are in Scotland's group for the tournament in Japan, which begins in less than three weeks. "It's always a very, very hard conundrum to solve".
Munster centre Chris Farrell has gained inclusion ahead of the versatile Will Addison of Ulster as head coach Schmidt opted for a five-strong centre line-up.
Hooker Rory Best was captain as expected, and will appear in his fourth and last World Cup.
Sean Cronin, Rhys Ruddock, Luke McGrath, Jack Carty and Andrew Conway have all been included.
Carbery is recovering from an ankle problem but Ireland insist he will be ready for the beginning of the tournament.
Former Ireland worldwide Luke Fitzgerald has been very vocal about Schmidt's decision to select Kleyn over his old pal Toner, as has, surprisingly, World Rugby vice president Agustín Pichot.
Schmidt said Sexton was over thumb and leg injuries, and will have a run in their last warm-up match against Wales in Dublin on Saturday.
Forwards - Rory Best, Tadhg Beirne, Jack Conan, Sean Cronin, Tadhg Furlong, Can Healy, Dave Kilcoyne, Iain Henderson, Jean Kleyn, Peter O'Mahony, Andrew Porter, Rhys Ruddock, James Ryan, John Ryan, Niall Scannell, CJ Stander, Josh van der Flier.
Backs: R Kearney, J Larmour, K Earls, J Stockdale, A Conway, R Henshaw, C Farrell, B Aki, G Ringrose, J Sexton, J Carbery, J Carty, C Murray, L McGrath.
