The buzz is keeping Phillips busy at red carpets and press events, where he was asked by Variety if we could expect to see Phoenix's Joker and Pattinson's Batman meet anytime soon.

He also thanked his father, praising him for instilling a strong work ethic within himself - although "Joker" director Todd Phillips might disagree, he added - and his mother for being "a constant source of inspiration". Calling his portrayal of the character one of the greatest experiences of his life, Phoenix revealed that he was most drawn to the Joker's alter ego, Arthur Fleck.

Some movies just want to watch the world burn. Continuing, Phillips says that he has appreciated all versions of the Joker, with making special mention of Jared Leto's version of the villain from 2016's Suicide Squad and Jack Nicholson's iteration of the character from 1989's Batman. "Oddly, in the states, comic books are our Shakespeare it seems, and you can do many many versions of "Hamlet". "Todd was like, "I think you should do the real thin person", said Phoenix, referencing the more classical Joker look from the comics and animated shows that made the Clown Prince of Crime into an otherworldly spindle. Looking at the reviews so far and the trailers that have been released, many people believe that Phoenix's Joker may rival or be among the best interpretations of the character. But in the end, it turned out to be a career highlight for the three-time Oscar nominated actor. But then there was something that was drawing me toward it... It just evolved as we worked together.

Joker is released November 4. And the future includes Robert Pattinson's debut as the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves's upcoming franchise relaunch, The Batman, another movie whose connection to the larger DCEU now seems tenuous.

DC and Warner Bros. are branching out from the DCEU with standalone movies about Batman and his arch-nemesis the Joker, leading to fan speculation that the two might share their own movie universe.

"When I was 15 or 16 my brother River (Phoenix) came home from work and he had a VHS copy of a movie called Raging Bull and he sat me down and made me watch it".
