Just Mercy is based on Bryan Stevenson's best-selling memoir of the same name.

The movie comes from the director of the brilliant hidden-gem Short Term 12, and the trailer alone lets us know that this is going to be a powerful, weepie drama. After graduating from Harvard, he leaves his more locative job offers behind and travels to Alabama to defend those who weren't given proper representation.

Just Mercy has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. who has previously helmed Larson starrer The Glass Castle and Short Term 12. Upon partnering with local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson), the two first take on the case of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who was convicted of murdering an 18-year-old girl and sentenced to die, albeit no evidence pointed to his guilt.

"Just Mercy", a film due out this winter, stars Jordan as lawyer Bryan Stevenson opposite Oscar victor Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, a man on death row in Alabama for a crime he did not commit. In the years that follow, Stevenson becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings, and overt and unabashed racism, as he fights for McMillian, and others like him, with the odds - and the system - stacked against them. Published in 2014, the book spent more than 118 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List, and won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence and an NAACP Image Award.

Just Mercy, co-written by Cretton and The Glass Castle's Andrew Lanham, also stars Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Tim Blake Nelson (Wormwood), Rafe Spall (Men in Black: International), and O'Shea Jackson Jr. Stevenson, Mike Drake, Niija Kuykendall, Gabriel Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Scott Budnick, Jeff Skoll and Charles D. King are executive producers.

Warner Bros. Pictures released the trailer for Just Mercy today, and it packs a stellar cast. They are joined by costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck ("Detroit", "Roman J. Israel, Esq."). The PG-13 film is slated for a limited Christmas release, with more theaters added for a wide release on January 10, 2020.
