MI beats Middle Tennessee, 40-21: Patterson tosses three TDs

The Wolverines debuted a new up-tempo, spread offense against MTSU, one that proved to be more effective and efficient than the one they ran last season. Before the first quarter was over, Patterson connected with Tarik Black on a 36-yard TD toss.

Patterson lost a fumble on the first play of the game and put the ball on the turf again later in the game, casting a shadow on his perspective of the Wolverines' 40-21 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.

After Middle Tennessee took a 7-0 lead on a 18-yard touchdown run by quarterback Asher O'Hara with 12:52 left in the first quarter, the Wolverines scored 24 unanswered points.

The quarterback battle will nearly certainly continue next week and other position battles, including along the offensive line, will be noteworthy to watch. Shea Patterson is completing 58.6 percent of his passes for 203 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

O'Hara finished with 217 yards through the air, 32 on the ground, and passing scores to JuCo transfer Jarrin Pierce and a last-minute 59-yard scamper from Jimmy Marshall to cap O'Hara's first start of 2019. The Michigan Wolverines have won 12 of their last 14 home games. On the next series, Thomas recovered a fumble forced by sophomore Aidan Hutchinson, which gave the offense great field position at the 28-yard line.

Mass shooting in Texas leaves seven dead and 22 injured
The number of people killed this year has already reached 142, surpassing the 140 people who were killed of all last year. Gerke said he those killed were aged 15 to 57, and that he would not be naming the gunman yet.

Jay Moody booted a 34-yard field goal for the Wolverines, to make it 7-3 following a 57-yard drive. The two-point conversation was unsuccessful, making the score 33-14 with less than a minute left in the third quarter.

The third quarter was quiet for both teams until the latter stages when junior Dylan McCaffrey entered the game at quarterback. He ripped off a 41-yard run to help get him to 90, showing speed, balance and some toughness up the middle. Sophomore Ronnie Bell returned it 27 yards to the Middle Tennessee State 15-yard line to set up sophomore Ben VanSumeren to cash in on a one-yard touchdown run that essentially sealed the victory.

MI running back Tru Wilson left the game with a hand injury after blocking a blitzing linebacker, giving Patterson time to throw a go-ahead, 36-yard TD pass to Black late in the first quarter.

The Army Black Knights and Michigan Wolverines meet Saturday in college football action at Michigan Stadium.
