Moscow contacted Washington over alleged Central Intelligence Agency spy

"Two years later, the American media publish a report that this national resides in the territory of the U.S. Of course, this information needs checking in the framework of the existing legal procedures", Zakharova said. CNN said on Tuesday the informant had helped show that Putin had directed Russian interference into the election to favor Trump.

Russian Federation has reached out to Interpol in search of Oleg B. Smolenkov, a former Kremlin official who disappeared in 2017 and is now suspected of having spied for the Central Intelligence Agency, a top Moscow official said Thursday.

American media reported this week that U.S. agents had extracted a high-level mole in the Kremlin who had confirmed Vladimir Putin's direct role in interfering in the 2016 presidential election.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the global law enforcement agency was asked whether it can confirm recent reports about Mr. Smolenkov having quietly relocated to northern Virginia. "With that in mind, Interpol was presented with questions regarding the disappearance of a foreign citizen and his presence on the territory of the United States".

She said questions were asked to the USA authorities via the Interpol on the circumstances of Smolenkov's disappearance and his alleged presence in the U.S.

She did not clarify when Moscow had sent the note.

Juicy stat: Major League Baseball sets record for most home runs in a season
So, there was a pretty decent chance the Major League Baseball single-season record would come at the hands of an Orioles pitcher. Athletics' shortstop Marcus Semien hit the year's 6,105th dinger to tie the previous league record set in 2017.

Missing since June 2017, interest in Mr. Smolenkov's whereabouts renewed this week after multiple news reports said that the Central Intelligence Agency relied for years on an unidentified Russian government official embedded in the Kremlin before extracting the informant around the same time as the former staffer's disappearance.

The Kremlin has said that Smolenkov was not a high-level official when he later transferred to the presidential administration after returning to Russian Federation and did not have access to President Vladimir Putin. He was reported to have disappeared with his wife, Antonina, and three children while on holiday in Montenegro in June 2017.

Zakharova called the USA reports "classic propaganda".

The informant reportedly confirmed to U.S. intelligence that Putin directed Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election, straining superpower relations and casting a cloud over Donald Trump's stunning victory.

The Kremlin said separately on Wednesday it did not know if one of its former employees had been a CIA informant, but that Russia's intelligence services were working on the case.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo angrily denounced reports detailing the secret exfiltration, saying such reports could put lives at risk.
