Shackelford: Rory McIlroy's POY award raises unfortunate questions

After five events in the United States, the tour heads to Asia for a three-tournament swing that features the new Zozo Championship in Japan that is set to feature 15-time major champion Tiger Woods and newly minted PGA Tour Player of the Year Rory McIlroy among other top names.

It's the third time McIlroy has won the Jack Nicklaus Award, and the first without having won a major.

McIlroy also won three tournaments including the coveted Players Championship and Tour Championship to end the season.

Along with a second straight PGA Championship title, Koepka also won the C.J. Cup and WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

The 30-year-old beat out competition from Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele for the award, which comes just weeks after his victory in the season-ending PGA Tour Championship.

McIlroy meanwhile admitted he had been somewhat surprised to pip PGA Championship victor and world number one Koepka to the award.

Rory McIlroy captures the biggest cash payout in golf history, claims the FedEx Cup and its $15 million prize.

Head-to-head Koepka was a whopping 21 strokes better in the three majors where McIlroy made the cut.

"I think it's a huge vote of confidence from the players that we play for more than just what maybe the narrative suggests". That's why Dustin Johnson's 20 PGA tour wins impress tour pros more than they impress media and fans.

Northern Ireland star McIlroy, who was also handed the accolade in 2012 and 2014, came out on top after a vote by fellow tour professionals. What stood out the most in Koepka's season, however, were the majors.

McIlroy's peers may simply have felt consistency trumped major play - even historically astounding numbers in majors by Koepka - and that's fine.

Global team captain Ernie Els and U.S. captain Woods will make their four selections to complete their 12-man teams on November 4 for the December 9-15 matchplay showdown at Royal Melbourne.

For world No. 10 Bryson DeChambeau, the highest-ranked player in the field, the event is an opportunity to follow Woods's instructions to his President's Cup players to keep sharp in the buildup to the event.
