United Kingdom lawmaker shames PM Boris Johnson over face veil remark

Sikh Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi delivered an impassioned on the floor of the UK Parliament, confronting Boris Johnson over his comments in a 2018 newspaper article in which he compared Muslim women wearing burqas to letterboxes and bank-robbers.

In the Commons today Mr Dhesi, the first Sikh MP to wear a turban in Parliament, used his personal experience of racism to criticise the Prime Minister.

Mr Johnson wrote in a national newspaper column previous year that it was "absolutely ridiculous people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes".

He also asked the Prime Minister when he planned on launching an inquiry into alleged Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

"So rather than hide behind sham and whitewash investigations, when will the Prime Minister finally apologise for his derogatory and racist remarks which have led to a rise in hate crime?"

Boris Johnson did not apologise for his comments, saying they were taken out of context.

Eagles offered Jordan Howard for Melvin Gordon
That should limit the return Los Angeles receives for a player entering the final year of his rookie deal. The trade talks were more conceptual than serious on the Eagles' end and the Bolts denied the offer.

According to a report from Tell MAMA - a United Kingdom group that monitors incidents of Islamaphobia - anti-Muslim incidents increased in the week following Mr Johnson's comments.

Facing calls of "shame" from opposition backbench MPs, the Prime Minister said that his comments were "a strong liberal defence of what women wear".

Johnson didn't manage to get through his first PMQs without a telling off from Speaker John Bercow, who chastised him for referring to Jeremy Corbyn using his name, breaking with "the very long-established procedure with which everybody, including the prime minister, must comply".

Johnson's estranged wife Marina Wheeler is of Sikh origin. I am also proud to say that, under this government, we have the most diverse Cabinet in the history of this country. "We truly reflect modern Britain".

The Prime Minister then deflected the conversation onto the issue of anti-Semitism within the Labour Party.
