'Absolutely disgusting': England game stopped by 'abhorrent' racism drama

England's Tyrone Mings speaks with manager Gareth Southgate during a racially-charged debut

England's Tyrone Mings speaks with manager Gareth Southgate during a racially-charged debut

Anti-racism group Kick It Out said the match should have been abandoned by officials after TV footage showed that racist abuse continued in the second half.

The match was stopped twice and the fans warned about their behaviour and a section of the crowd was ejected before half time.

"There can be no more pitiful fines or short stadium bans", the group said.

There was another pause in play as half-time approached following more racist behaviour, but play resumed after widespread discussion and the departure of a group of individuals in the home end.

Seemingly unfazed by the ugly scenes, England won 6-0 but the result was nearly the last thing on the England players' minds after the match. "If UEFA care at all about tackling discrimination. then points deductions and tournament expulsion must follow".

While step two of UEFA's protocol was not initiated, Mings was satisfied with the process and pleased with how the players stuck together.

If it carries on, the referee can take the players off the field into the dressing rooms for a bit and the stadium announcer will make another announcement.

"Because of racist behaviour which is interfering with the game, the referee has indicated he may have to suspend the match".

But despite the horrendous scenes the Bulgarian FA president Mihaylov has tried to turn the gun on England players, by blaming them and Gareth Southgate for making false accusations.

"Should the England players and the English FA have refused to have played it given the fact all the predictions and all their concerns came true?"

Eason, Ahmed lead Washington over Arizona 51-27
Washington made a few big plays on special teams in the first quarter but squandered a chance to take a big early lead. But in the first quarter on Saturday, UW blocked a punt, recovered a separate muffed punt, ripped off a 44-yard run ...

Raheem Sterling then netted twice either side of half-time before Harry Kane rounded off the scoring to take England to the brink of qualification.

Borisov said he "categorically condemned the behavior of some of those present at the stadium", insisting that European Union member Bulgaria was "one of the most tolerant countries in the world".

Bulgaria fans in the crowd were also seen performing Nazi salutes and holding up shirts with the UEFA logo and words which read "No Respect" - a reference to the European governing body's "Respect" campaign aimed at curbing racism in the sport.

5,000 of the 46,340 seats had to be left empty, that number will be reduced to 3,000 for the game against Czech Republic next month.

Former England striker Ian Wright, a pundit for Match of the Day, said: "It's a great day".

"Hopefully, the higher powers will deal with the incidents, but we couldn't do much more than what we did on the pitch". It doesn't do anything.

I think there would have been racist behaviour whatever had been said or done beforehand but what happened beforehand probably did make last night worse, as those who wanted to act up knew that they had the flawless opportunity and biggest audience (via TV) to get maximum publicity/coverage.

Before the match Bulgaria's football chief Borislav Mihaylov said England players should face consequences if they breach UEFA protocols in the qualifying matches and expressed his "extreme disappointment" at the England players' comments ahead of the match and spoke of the "unjust branding" of local fans.
