Almost 300 arrests confirmed during first day of disruption in central London

On Monday, Berlin and dozens of cities around the world are set to experience what London did in April: There, "Extinction Rebellion" activists paralyzed traffic, forced the suspension of 55 bus lines, and led police to arrest more than 700 demonstrators in a massive 10-day display of civil disobedience.

Video of the raid, which shows police using a battering ram to break into a south London building, quickly went viral Saturday as activists and British lawmakers expressed alarm at the aggressive tactic.

Extinction Rebellion say they want to "shut down Westminster" for two weeks with their London protests.

Demonstrators shut down roads around Parliament and Whitehall in London, at the start of what is expected to be two weeks of action in the United Kingdom capital.

Police said 21 people had been arrested as of Monday morning. Hundreds of environmental activists have taken to the streets of Wellington to kick off a global day of action against climate change.

"We're here because the government is not doing enough on the climate emergency", protester Lizzy Mansfield said.

"Halifax Regional Police would like to reiterate that we respect people's right for peaceful protest, and that public safety has been our top consideration as we planned our response for the Macdonald Bridge protest", said Halifax Regional Police in a news release.

Val Harvey said: "I'm 81 years old and I've been on an ecological and environmentalist journey for a long time".

In the Netherlands, 50 people were arrested after they erected a tent to block a road in central Amsterdam.

Vinnie Jones: I won’t fall in love again
Jones added: "In that last week of her life when the doctors said there were no more treatments, I never told her she was dying". She is the only one. whenever I let myself down, or her down, she was always the strongest, the person who I answered to.

Protestors covered in fake blood gather around the Wall Street Bull during an Extinction Rebellion demonstration in NY on October 7,2019.

The Paris event brought the area around Chatelet to a standstill.

In Sydney several hundred protesters staged a sit-in on a busy road in the Australian capital. Some were seated, some chained to a barrel.

The protesters in Sydney were arrested and bundled into a mobile "custody unit" on Monday afternoon after they allegedly failed to move on when asked to do so by police.

Earlier in London, police said some 135 climate activists were arrested.

A group of protesters poured fake blood on Wall Street's famous "Charging Bull" statue as part of a "die-in" demonstration on Monday.

Activists starting blocking traffic at both Broadview Avenue on the east side and Castle Frank Road on the west side at around 8 a.m.

As protests got under way in the capital, police were seen cutting two Extinction Rebellion protesters out of a auto blocking off Victoria Embankment.

Those at the Berlin protests included activist Carola Rackete, best known as the German captain of a humanitarian rescue ship who was arrested for docking in an Italian port without authorization this year to disembark migrants rescued at sea. Activist Botzki says it is impossible to know just what percentage of protesters are willing to go that far: "A mother with two kids at home can not get herself arrested".
