The capsule carrying Nick Hague, Alexey Ovchinin and Hazzaa al-Mansoori touched down on the steppe in Kazakhstan in Central Asia on Thursday.

Hazzaa Al-Mansoori of the United Arab Emirates was to touch down in the Kazakh steppes around 1100 GMT along with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, who both survived a failed launch to the ISS past year.

Ovchinin served as commander of the vehicle, while landed safely at 6:59 a.m. EDT in Kazakhstan, according to a news release from NASA. Six hours later, they began their 203-day mission on the station, orbiting Earth 3,248 times and traveling 86.1 million miles. She is expected to return to Earth in February 2020, nearly a year after her launch.

He launched on September 25 with Nasa astronaut Jessica Meir and Oleg Skripochka of Roscosmos.

As part of its space plans, the UAE has also announced its aim to become the first Arab country to send an unmanned probe to orbit Mars by 2021, naming it "Hope". That's a significant boost from the typical crew of six, but with the return of Hague, Ovchinin, and Ali Almansoori, the remaining ISS inhabitants can now dive into their work on Expedition 61.

The duo tested free-flying robots, as well as devices created to replicate the structure and function of human organs.

Hague's first two spacewalks in March continued the overall upgrade of the station's power system with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries on one pair of the station's solar arrays.

The three astronauts dived towards the planet onboard the Russian Soyuz MS-12 capsule, deorbiting from above 250 miles up in space on October 3.

Mansoori has been active on Twitter where he posted photos of the UAE and the holy city of Makkah from the space station.

The United Arab Emirates' first astronaut, Hazza Al-Mansoori, is returning to Earth on Thursday after spending eight days in space.
