Brexit deal is "essentially impossible" ever, says Downing Street source

According to the source, the German chancellor "made clear a deal is overwhelmingly unlikely and she thinks the EU has a veto on us leaving the customs union".

Britain has been trying for more than three years to find a way to deliver on the result of a 2016 referendum and end its nearly five-decade involvement in the European project.

Riding a wave of British frustrations with the saga, Mr Johnson is threatening to leave at any cost - with or without a withdrawal deal - on October 31. A spokesman for the German chancellor confirmed the call had taken place but declined to comment further.

But he told reporters the pair had a "frank exchange" - diplomatic speak for a disagreement.

European officials charged that Johnson was launching a new "blame game" strategy meant to confuse voters over who was responsible for the breakdown in talks.

"At stake is the future of Europe and the United Kingdom as well as the security and interests of our people", he said, addressing Johnson.

Several EU leaders said they are willing to consider another Brexit delay.

Mr Johnson talked to his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar for 40 minutes. Merkel is well aware of the blame game which Downing Street has started, but does not intend to enter it, a German official said under the condition of anonymity.

Jolyon Maugham, a lawyer backing the case, said there are two elements to the ruling.

The Irish government published a 2020 spending plan with a $1.95 billion relief fund based on the assumption that there will be no agreement.

He said that "people were thinking in Britain: "oh yeah, we can do a no-deal and then we go sitting around the table and we are going to talk about a future relationship and everything will be fine".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think-tank, however, warned that "even a relatively benign no-deal Brexit" would see Britain's debt burden surge to 50-year highs.

The U.K. Parliament is set to be suspended later Tuesday so that a new session can begin next week with a major policy speech from Johnson's Conservative government.

Johnson unveiled a new plan last week aimed at keeping Britain's border with European Union member Ireland free-flowing after Brexit - a crucial issue in the divorce talks between Brussels and London.

And he already compared the EU's aims to those of Adolf Hitler, arguing the bloc was trying to create a super state that mirrored the Nazi leader's attempts to dominate the European continent. The bloc says the proposals - which would require customs checks on some goods moving between Northern Ireland and Ireland - don't fulfill the UK's commitment to a frictionless Irish border.

Sterling slid on the global money markets after a No 10 source said Angela Merkel was making a deal impossible and Brussels accused Boris Johnson of trying to play a "stupid blame game".

Mr Johnson's opponents in Britain accused the government of deliberately undermining the Brexit talks.

The court concluded there was no need to take any pre-emptive action against Johnson because he had given legal assurances that he would abide by a law compelling him to ask the European Union for an extension if no divorce deal had been agreed.
