"We have tried petitions, lobbying and marches, and now time is running out", Australian activist Jane Morton told the AFP news agency.

Founded in Britain past year, the movement, also known as XR, now has chapters in some 50 countries.

Extinction Rebellion Quebec says it has more actions planned in Montreal on Tuesday.

Many of those who blocked Horseferry Road overnight were warned they will be arrested unless they move to nearby Trafalgar Square, as police seek to avoid a second day's disruption which saw parts of central London virtually cut off to traffic.

Organisers have blockaded a number of sites in central London.

"We'll stay here until the end and if they must remove us by carrying us out, moving us out or using teargas, we will be here, we will remain united, non-violent", said Clement Schneider, 26, from Fribourg, Switzerland.

"We have no choice but to rebel until our government declares a climate and ecological emergency and takes the action that is required to save us".

One XR Wigan protestor said: "She's a courageous woman, it's a selfless act".

"There are other ways to protest, again, without preventing drivers from circulating on the different bridges and the road network", he said.

In Berlin, around 1,000 people gathered before dawn to block the Grosser Stern, a traffic circle in the middle of the German capital's Tiergarten park dominated by the landmark Victory Column. Hundreds were pulled away from the scene and 30 of them were charged.

The group staged the protest on Monday (local time) at the bull statue near Wall Street, at the foot of Broadway.

It plans to shut down some of Canada's busiest bridges on Monday, in line with protests around the world; including the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge over Halifax Harbour, the Burrard Street bridge in Vancouver and the Prince Edward Viaduct in Toronto, by having protesters lie down or sit in traffic lanes, according to The Canadian Press. These demonstrations are part of Extinction Rebellion Canada's broader Bridge Out campaign meant to pressure the Canadian government to take action on climate issues.

Extinction Rebellion is an worldwide sociopolitical movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to put an end to mass extinction and reduce the risk of ecological collapse.
