Info from 2nd whistle-blower could undercut Trump

The telephone call and the whistleblower complaint filed in August prompted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump on September 24, saying his actions jeopardized USA election integrity and threatened national security.

"Secretary Perry absolutely supported and encouraged the president to speak to the new president of Ukraine to discuss matters related to their energy security and economic development", Perry's Energy Department spokeswoman, Shaylyn Hynes, said in an email.

The lawyer said the second whistleblower, who has firsthand knowledge of US President Donald Trump's call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in which the US leader is accused of pressuring Ukraine for personal political gains, has spoken with the intelligence community's internal watchdog.

On Sunday, lawyers said a second whistle-blower had come forward to substantiate an August complaint from an unidentified United States intelligence official, which touched off the investigation.

But Mr Trump and his supporters have rejected the accusations that he did anything improper.

The original whistleblower complained that Mr Trump was "using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country" in the 2020 United States election.

During the July phone call, Mr Trump said there had been "a lot of talk" that Mr Biden had shut down a Ukrainian investigation into a company where his son worked.

Diplomatic text messages released by Democrats last week show that US officials were involved in the effort to secure a public commitment from Ukraine to look into the business dealings of Hunter Biden.

"It won't work, because the American people know me - and they know him", Biden said in an op-ed article.

Adam Schiff (D-California), Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) and Eliot Engel (D-New York) cited press reports to claim Trump's decision was meant to pressure Kiev into opening a probe of Democrat presidential front-runner Joe Biden.

"The inquiries into Burisma and other companies must be conducted without government involvement", he said.

In addition to leading the delegation in May, Perry has visited Ukraine multiple times as energy secretary and helped craft a deal that increased US coal experts to the country.

- Trump pushes back - Trump pushed back at the allegations in tweets Sunday, but did not mention the second whistleblower.

Ryaboshapka told reporters that his office was "auditing" relevant cases that were closed, dismissed or put on hold by his predecessors.

A rough transcript of Trump's call with Zelenskiy, released by the White House, has already corroborated the complaint's central claim that Trump sought to pressure Ukraine on the investigation.

"All of you know your Constitution", McConnell says in the video.

Last week subpoenas were delivered to the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a move that the top U.S. diplomat branded "harassment".

Hynes' remark comes as Perry becomes the latest administration official drawn into inquiries in a House impeachment probe of Trump.

"The last thing we want is getting dragged into USA domestic politics", he said at a briefing after talks with his Latvian counterpart.

He will allow the Democrats to interview a series of witnesses next week.

"Was this person SPYING on the U.S. President?"

The Secretary of State has become a key figure in the Democrats' investigation.

The chairmen of three House panels leading the impeachment investigation are seeking information related to Trump pressing his Ukrainian counterpart to uncover dirt on 2020 USA presidential contender Joe Biden - and the alleged conditioning of military aid on that favour.
