That count does not include the MI death, according to MDHHS.

Michigan's heath department has announced the state's first death associated with an outbreak of vaping-related lung illnesses.

At this time no other information about the individual has been released.

The state's health secretary, Dr. Rachel Levine, announced the death Friday and said Pennsylvania has also reported nine confirmed cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thirty lung injury cases in MI have been confirmed or deemed likely to have resulted from vaping. Numerous reports involve severe, life-threatening illnesses in previously healthy people.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 1,080 cases of lung injuries linked to vaping in 48 states and one US territory as of October 1.

There have been 21 deaths confirmed from 18 states: two in California, two in Kansas, two in OR, and one each from Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

According to the U.S. CDC, 80 per cent of patients suffering from vaping-related illness are under the age of 35 - 16 per cent of patients are under 18, while 21 per cent are between the ages of 18 and 21.

No single device, ingredient or additive has been identified as the culprit.

The department urged vaping users who experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fever and/or nausea and vomiting to immediately seek medical attention.

"Additionally, consumers who choose to use any vaping products should not modify or add any substances such as THC or other oils to products purchased in stores and should not purchase any vaping products, including those containing THC, off the street or from other illicit channels", he said, adding that "according to recent findings, most of the patients impacted by these illnesses reported using THC-containing products, suggesting THC products are playing a role in the these illnesses".

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer accuses the makers of flavored nicotine products of using candy flavors and deceptive advertising to get children hooked.

Now, doctors are sounding the alarm as it appears lung injury cases associated with e-cigarette products continues to rise, even here in Canada, where health authorities are investigating two reported instances.

- Anyone vaping should not start smoking cigarettes as a replacement for nicotine.
