Mexican authorities on Wednesday released additional, dramatic footage of the botched October 17 operation to capture the son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Mexican security forces had a son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman outside a house on his knees against a wall before they were forced to back off and let him go as his gunmen shot up the western city of Culiacan.

Ovidio Guzman is now involved in the running of the Sinaloa Cartel following the extradition and sentencing of his father, along with his brother Ivan.

A vehicle is set ablaze by cartel gunmen following the detention of Ovidio Guzman, son of drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, in Culiacan.

"Buddy, tell them to stop everything", an officer can be heard in the video released during Wednesday's morning news conference by Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) and his top military advisors.

Mexico's Public Safety Secretary Alfonso Durazo said that the aborted operation to arrest Guzman was a "hasty action" that deserves criticism, but added the government's security strategy is sound.

"What could have become a scene of war and the shedding seen with his left blown of innocent blood was resolved in favor of a return to peace and protecting the population", he said.

The recording - which appears to have been taken by a camera mounted on one of the soldiers' helmets - shows the moment that one of El Chapo's 10 children, 28-year-old Ovidio Guzman, a woman, and two other men come out of a house with their hands up, stepping into a garage. First a young woman with her face obscured emerges, followed by the slim figure of Guzman in a baseball cap.

El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison in a United States jail earlier this year for the multi-billion-dollar drug-trafficking empire he oversaw.

Soon after police arrested Guzman, cartel gunmen surrounded the residence and staged gun battles and burning road blocks around Culiacan, causing widespread panic.
