President Donald Trump said in a tweet Friday that acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan is stepping down.

"With his [Trump's] support, over the last six months we have made tremendous progress mitigating the border security and humanitarian crisis we faced this year, by reducing unlawful crossings, partnering with governments in the region to counter human smugglers and [addressing] the causes of migration, and [deploying] additional border security resources", he said.

The president said on Twitter that Mr McAleenan has done an outstanding job and border crossings are down.

He tweeted the company will adding solar arrays and batteries to its Supercharger charging stations "as fast as possible". Wildfires continue to rage while new ones have broken out in both northern and southern California.

During his tenure, McAleenan, a career civil servant, managed to decrease the number of people entering the United States illegally across the southern border. While Trump said he would be nominating a new acting secretary next week, from "many wonderful candidates", the position would normally pass to the current acting Deputy Secretary, David Pekoske - a retired US Coast Guard vice-admiral who now serves as head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Trump says he has "Many wonderful candidates" to fill the position.

For the structure at DHS, Breitbart News exclusively reported accounts in which administration sources said McAleenan had implemented a personnel agenda that sought to protect the bureaucratic allies of former DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

But he quickly drew scrutiny from hard-liners close to Trump for his ties to the Obama administration, where he was deputy commissioner of the agency.
