Kurds strike deal with Syrian government

Democratic presidential hopefuls denounced President Donald Trump's decision to pull US troops back from northern Syria, saying in an OH debate on Tuesday he had endangered America's longtime Kurdish allies while empowering foes Russian Federation and Syria.

The Turkish president's comments come a day ahead of a visit by U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence to the Turkish capital Ankara.

"I think they'll have a successful meeting", Trump said at a news conference alongside Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

The American move effectively abandoned the Kurdish fighters allied with the United States and cleared the way for Turkey's invasion aimed at crushing them.

Asked about the Kurdish militias that have been allied with the USA against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Trump said they would be fine because they "know how to fight".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has so far defied US threat of sanctions, saying the only way its military offensive would end was if Syrian Kurdish fighters leave a designated border area.

Trump downplayed the crisis that followed his decision to pull out of Syria, which critics say amounted to giving Turkey a green light to invade Syria's northeast, where it has been attacking Kurdish fighters whom Turkey views as terrorists.

In his White House remarks, Trump said it didn't harm USA strategic interests if Russian Federation moved into the territory where the US withdrew.

While Turkey's move was hailed by millions of displaced Syrian refugees across the world, Turkic countries and many Muslim nations, Western governments have slammed Ankara's counter-terror operation and favored a designated terror group over a sovereign North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally. "They're not angels", he said of the Kurds.

The Turkish leader told parliament no power could stop the offensive against Kurds in Syria until its goals have been achieved.

"They have a problem with Turkey, they have a problem with the border". The American move effectively abandoned Kurdish fighters and cleared the way for Turkey's invasion aimed at crushing them.

Following the U.S.'s withdrawal from northern Syria, Russia has sent troops to the war-torn region to mediate a resolution between Turkey and the Kurds.

In an address to his ruling party legislators, Erdogan said Turkey would not be coerced into halting its offensive or accepting offers for mediation with the Kurdish fighters, which Turkey considers to be terrorists. "But the Kurds know how to fight and, as I said, they're not angels".

After conflicting messages on whether or not Erdogan would meet the USA delegation, his communications director Fahrettin Altun clarified that the two would meet on Thursday.

Trump said the conflict was between Turkey and Syria and that it was "fine" for Russian Federation to help its ally Damascus.

"The US can not stick to unilateralism", Cavusoglu said. "They've got a lot of sand over there, so there's a lot of sand they can play with". Since the invasion, the USA has imposed economic sanctions against Turkey and called for a cease-fire, a proposal Erdogan has rebuffed. He also said Turkey would "give the appropriate answer to these sanctions".

He noted that Syria was getting "some help with Russian Federation and that's fine".
