Wildfire threatens homes, prompts evacuations in Pacific Palisades, California

Origin point: Near 500 N. Palisades Drive; then the brush fire moved uphill toward a community of homes along Charmel Lane.

The Los Angeles Fire Department ordered mandatory evacuations for residents near the now-named Palisades Fire, which began around 10:39 AM PT and has been terrain-driven (meaning wind is not a factor).

Nonetheless, an evacuation order was issued for the area due to potential fire behavior and smoke as well as expected arrival of large airplanes to drop fire retardant. About 200 homes within eight residential blocks were under threat from the flames andhave been heavily impacted by smoke, said LAFD Chief Patrick Butler during a press conference.

The blaze broke out Monday morning in a coastal canyon of the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

More than 300 personnel from the LAFD and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to battle the fire by air and ground, KTLA reported.

Predicted weak to moderate Santa Ana winds did not materialize in the area and instead remained confined to the north-west on the central coast.

While the fire is contained within a perimeter, Butler said the biggest concern for firefighters right now is the fire getting out of the containment area.

Still a pall of thick white and brown smoke was visible for miles around the fire, which scorched an estimated 30 acres of steep slopes thick with dry brush and chaparral.

"I immediately started packing my stuff, my valuables", said Charlie Lyons, 22.

There was no immediate word on a possible cause of the fire, and there were no reports of injuries or of structures damaged, Weireter said.
