As US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for the whistleblower's name to be revealed, Facebook and Google-owned YouTube have banned content on their platform that purports to name the whistleblower whose complaint led to the impeachment inquiry against Trump.

Referring to the "coordinating harm" policy, Facebook and YouTube on Saturday said it would block references to the alleged whistleblower's name and photo, Washington Post reported.

Youtube also stated that the videos mentioning the whistleblower's name will be removed, according to CNN. The spokesperson said the company would use a combination of machine learning and human review to scrub the content. The removals will reportedly have an impact on titles and descriptions of videos as well as the videos' content itself.

Breitbart has joined several conservative news outlets in attempting to spread the name of the whistleblower after becoming the first media outlet to releasing the individual's alleged name.

Twitter defended its decision to allow the sharing of the Central Intelligence Agency officer's name, despite acknowledgement that such tweets might violate Twitter's policies. In this case, though, it's justifying the decision under policies closer to its anti-harassment rules - at least while the name isn't widely reported.

The company's statement followed the publication of an article from Breitbart News, which said it identified the whistleblower.

Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the alleged name of the whistleblower earlier this week. The issue is pertaining to the company's policy in which an individual's name is not considered personal information. Twitter spokeswoman Katie Rosborough argued that Owens tweet and others did not violate that policy because the tweets did not share the supposed whistleblower's home addresses, contact information or financial details.

The federal Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989 prohibits the U.S. Office of Special Counsel from disclosing a whistleblower's identity, but does not extend to people outside the government.

So far, Trump has avoided identifying the whistleblower by name. Exposing whistleblowers can be tricky business, even for a president. That person's identity was not disclosed by intelligence officials because of federal laws created to detect whistleblowers from retaliation.

Trump and his allies have attacked the whistleblower and called for that person to come forward, while Sen.
