Lowry finishes in the pack as McIlroy wins HSBC Champions in China

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy"I think if I can go out tomorrow and play similar to how I did today I should have a good chance to win

Victory at the Sheshan International Golf Club was McIlroy's third World Golf Championships (WGC) title, and first since the Dell Technologies Match Play in 2015.

McIlroy was a mop-topped phenom when he arrived on the PGA TOUR 10 years ago. What's in Rory's bag? "Even if I'm having a bad day, I'm trying over every single shot".

He didn't get the most out of his round Saturday at Sheshan International.

"I tried my best".

On Sunday, he'll try to hold off Louis Oosthuizen, Xander Schauffele, Matthew Fitzpatrick and the rest of the chase pack as he looks to win for the fourth time in a little more than seven months.

McIlroy played bogey-free on the weekend and closed with a 4-under 68. 6, 9, 14 and 18 to edge in front of Oosthuizen and take the outright 54-hole lead. "I need to play really good golf tomorrow".

McIlroy now gets a two-week break before wrapping up his year in Dubai.

McIlroy got the first crack off the tee on the first sudden-death playoff hole.

"If I go out tomorrow and replicate what I've done the first three days, I think I'll be pretty hard to beat", he said.

A mistake on 18 in regulation allowed Schauffele to earn a play-off - as they both finished on 19-under - before the American then went into the rough off the tee.

Frank Lampard hails Chelsea spirit after three-goal comeback against Ajax
Chelsea started the second-half the much better of the two sides and looked as though they may edge their way back into the game. The Spaniard found it extremely hard to handle winger David Neres and the defensive side of his game has always been suspect.

McIlroy had also made a mistake with his final impulse of regulatory play and flirted with the water on the right, but it expired with a ideal blow a few minutes later and hit an imposing four-yard pin 230 yards high to be left 25 feet away. the eagle, while Schauffele put his ball back into play and shortened a wedge to eight feet.

The 26-year-old hit a poor second on the seventh after a big drive but holed a long putt for a birdie to get back within one before all three of the final group laid up on the eighth and put their approaches close for birdies. McIlroy, whose four majors came between 2011 and 2014, before Koepka even made it out onto the PGA Tour, accepted the American's comment with grace, but you can be sure it fired him up inside.

Fitzpatrick shot a second round score of five-under par 67 and has a 36 hole score at the midway point of the tournament at -11.

The win was McIlroy's fourth in his last 15 starts.

"Four wins this year have been wonderful, " he said.

Schauffele would've become the first player to win back-to-back WGC-HSBC Champions titles. I don't think I've ever actually done that.

"You just can't give away holes", Oosthuizen said.

No one has won back-to-back FedExCups, but McIlroy's defense is off to a strong start. He has finished top 20 in 10 of his past 13 starts, including a FedEx Cup playoff victory.

After opening with rounds of 70 and 69 to sit joint-11th at the halfway stage on his WGC debut, MacIntyre slipped to a share of 22nd following a 73 that was a mixed bag of four birdies and five bogeys in the company of Justin Rose and Tony Finau.
