Next year's Met Gala theme revealed

Streep will serve as co-chair of the 2020 gala alongside Emma Stone and fellow first-timer Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton; the French fashion brand is also underwriting the May 4 event.

Following on from this year, which took inspiration from Susan Sontag's Notes on Camp, next years event will look to another literary heavyweight, Virginia Woolf, and her seminal time-travelling novel Orlando.

"The Costume Institute's spring 2020 exhibition will trace more than a century and a half of fashion - from 1870 to the present - along a disruptive timeline, as part of The Met's 150th-anniversary celebration", the Met announced in a press release.

The gala launches the spring exhibit, which will run from May 7 through September 7.

Wanting to challenge the way we think about fashion history Andrew Bolton, Head Curator of the Met's Art's Costume Institute said the show is about "reimagining of fashion history that's fragmented, discontinuous, and heterogeneous".

"This exhibition will consider the ephemeral nature of fashion, employing flashbacks and fast-forwards to reveal how it can be both linear and cyclical", Max Hollein, director of the Met, said in a statement.

The exhibition will also feature a section on the future of fashion. For example, a black silk faille princess-line dress from the late 1870s will be paired with an Alexander McQueen "Bumster" skirt from 1995.

The Tony, Olivier, and Pulitzer victor will co-chair the 2020 Met Gala alongside Louis Vutton Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière, Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour, and Oscar winners (and fellow movie musical alums) Emma Stone and Meryl Streep.

Last year's theme was camp, while the prior year's was Catholicism.
