The American Film Institute revealed, on Wednesday, its pick for the top ten films and television programs of 2019.

This year's crop is diverse, with films from lauded veterans Clint Eastwood, Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, Noah Baumbach, and Quentin Tarantino alongside relative newcomers to the awards conversation like Todd Phillips, Taika Waititi, and Rian Johnson.

Meanwhile, South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" will receive a special award because it falls outside the organization's criteria for American films and TV shows.

Of the 10 films, two were directed by women: Greta Gerwig's retelling of the Louisa May Alcott classic Little Women and Lulu Wang's The Farewell.

Driver recently won the Best Actor trophy for the movie at the Gotham Awards and is one of the top contenders for getting an Oscar nod at the 92nd Academy Awards.

On the television side, the AFI jury singled out the final seasons of "Game of Thrones" and "Veep", as well as "Chernobyl", "The Crown", "Fosse/Verdon", "Pose", "Succession", "Unbelievable", "The Watchmen" and "When They See Us". This jury is made up of AFI Trustees, scholars, artists and critics as they determine the year's most outstanding achievements. The juries included actors John Amos and Delroy Lindo, directors Betty Thomas and Lesli Linka Glatter, and writer Callie Khouri, alongside film scribes, academics, and film historian Leonard Maltin, as well as the AFI Board of Trustees, among others.

Missing out on the AFI's top 10 does not necessarily mean a given film should be ruled out of the Academy's Best Picture race, as omissions didn't stop foreign-produced titles like 2011's The Artist and 2010's The King's Speech - both of which were honored with special AFI awards, as the Mexican-made Roma was a year ago - from winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

This year's AFI Awards recognize 2019's most outstanding achievements in the art of the moving image that enhance the rich cultural heritage of America's art form, inspire audiences and artists alike and make a mark on American society.
