Beijing Attacks US for 'Weaponisation' of Outer Space

Space Force, once mocked by critics as a science-fiction fantasy akin to the "Star Wars" movie franchise, is the first new US military branch since 1947.

China on Monday expressed deep concern and firm opposition as U.S. Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, approving the establishment of a space force, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a regular briefing. Last February, the United States Pentagon claimed China and Russian Federation had begun significant efforts to develop technology that could disrupt American satellites in a crisis or military conflict. "We will work with (Department of Defense) leaders, Congress, our joint military teammates, industry and our national security partners as we establish the Space Force to ensure continued American leadership in space". By creating a new, separate service with a dedicated goal, the intent of the new branch is to maintain space superiority even as space becomes more crowded and contested. Geng Shuang also called on the worldwide community to uphold treaties to prevent the weaponisation of space.

The newly designated Space Force will be commanded by General John Raymond as the new Chief of Space Operations who, until December 20, headed the Space Command of the Air Force.

"We hope that the global community, especially the major powers concerned, will adopt a cautious and responsible attitude to prevent outer space from becoming a new battlefield and work together to maintain lasting peace and tranquillity in outer space", he said.

Donald Trump renews his attack on wind turbines
In fact, U.S. wind power has tripled over the last decade, and is now the largest source of renewable energy in the States. This time the flow of criticism, apart from being openly scathing, pointed to a possible "mental issue".

'With my signature today you will witness the birth of the Space Force, ' he said.

It will be comprised of about 16,000 air force and civilian personnel, some already taking part in the Space Command, according to Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett.

The establishment of the Space Force is seen by the USA military as a recognition of the need to more effectively organize for the defense of US interests in space - especially satellites used for navigation and communication. It officially becomes the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Services. China has launched a similar network of a satellite called the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, created from 42 separate satellite launches.
