"I thought that we made good adjustments as a team".

Luka Doncic continued his MVP-calibre form, leading the Dallas Mavericks to an impressive win over the Los Angeles Lakers on the road, bringing their 10-game win streak to an end. Dallas cruised to the 14-point win, marking its seventh in its past eight games. Dwight Powell had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Justin Jackson scored 15 points. The Lakers came up empty on a couple of possessions as the quarter winded down but still went into the second up five points.

But after the Lakers got to within 10, Doncic did what he could to undo their progress.

"It was very bad, awful for me", Doncic said.

Doncic dropped 16 of his 27 points in the third quarter, too, while helping the Mavericks hold the Lakers to just 17 total team points - their lowest output in a single quarter so far this season. "I just kept attacking, trust your shot, and I'm so glad we got that win".

The highlight of the night came when Doncic drilled a deep step-back 3-pointer over James in the fourth quarter with Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki looking on from a courtside seat. LeBron James and Anthony Davis were the only Lakers players to score more than 10 points, with James scoring 25 and Davis 27.

"He hit a couple of hellacious shots", Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We just got to understand it, keep our eye on the ball, stay focused, stay humble and stick together". The Lakers went into the fourth quarter trailing by 15.

The Dallas Mavericks took advantage of all the Lakers mistakes and beat them, 114-100, at Staples Center.

But the Lakers' schedule gets much tougher in December, starting with this showdown and a three-game road trip in the upcoming week to Denver, Utah and Portland. James and Davis both expect to know more about their roster by January, and this opening game underlined the importance of a consistent effort, particularly on defence.
