Virginia clinches spot in ACC title game with win over rival Tech

Virginia's win over Virginia Tech was a massive weight off the shoulders of the Cavaliers as it was the first time since 2003 that Virginia had beaten its in-state rival. For years, UVa used its disappointment against Virginia Tech as fuel to the fire, with the last few losses certainly playing a big part in the Cavaliers' motivation for what transpired.

After taking the lead with a 48-yard area objective and including an exclamation level with a defensive landing with a minute left, Virginia's 39-30 win snaps one of many longest and most painful rivalry dropping streaks in faculty soccer historical past and marks the Cavaliers' newest unlocked achievement below coach Bronco Mendenhall. The way in which UVA won on Saturday, however, made it an instant classic that will long be remembered by the Cavalier-faithful in Charlottesville. Since then, Schaub was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2004 and played for the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens in a long National Football League career. The next three series ended in punts before the Hokies drove 71 yards to take their first lead at 20-13 on Deshawn McClease's 1-yard run. "That's not our strength", Hokies coach Justin Fuente said.

Friday's game won't be the first time the two squads have played with a championship game appearance at stake.

In 2007, Virginia Tech won 33-21 in a season where both teams were nationally ranked - the No. 8 Hokies beat No. 16 Virginia.

"I guess you'd have to think when was the last time, at least in my tenure, that we kicked the ball through the up-rights in that kind of pressure-filled moment to win a football game?"

A championship game appearance was again on the line in 2011, and the Hokies won a lopsided 38-0 affair.

The Argentine was recently sacked as Tottenham Hotspur and replaced by Jose Mourinho. It wasn't nice to see them getting criticised.

In recent history under Mendenhall, the Cavaliers have demonstrated improvement in their performance in the Commonwealth Cup game.

After being blown out 52-10 in their first season under Mendenhall in 2016 and then shut out 10-0 in 2017, the Cavaliers almost snapped their losing streak last season.

Brian Delaney also made two field goals.

Perkins ran for two long touchdowns and passed for another for the Cavaliers (9-3, 6-2), who became the seventh different victor in as many years to win the Coastal Division.

Last season's meeting resulted in the type of intensity you'd hope for in a rivalry game.

The Cavaliers also improved to 9-3 on the season. Eli Hanback would recover the fumble for the defensive touchdown. They have been a part of the Mendenhall turnaround, and want to end it at Scott Stadium on a high note. Virginia had a chance to win the game in overtime after Virginia Tech settled for the field goal, but Perkins fumbled the ball, the Hokies recovered and the streak lived on. Virginia will now face the Clemson Tigers - who won the ACC Atlantic - in the ACC Championship game on December 7th.
