Initially, there was only one case of the coronavirus reported in the United States, which has since expanded to numerous reported cases.

While it's too early to tell if this latest threat will prove as deadly, health authorities are drawing on lessons from that grim past. This person arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Thursday. Neither patient had symptoms while they were traveling back from Wuhan, according to the CDC.

He is said to be recovering, but remained hospitalized at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington on Friday.

SARS initially was traced to civet cats sold in a live animal market, but later scientists decided it probably originated in bats that infected the civets. The new measures were quickly brought in ahead of the Chinese New Year holiday this weekend, which typically sees tens of millions of citizens traveling both domestically and internationally.

Health officials in Chicago are "investigating locations where this patient went after returning to IL and are identifying any close contacts who were possibly exposed".

The Chinese disease prevention authorities published on Friday electron microscopic images of the novel coronavirus, which has already claimed the lives of 26 people and has managed to spread beyond China. Officials say a diagnosis can not be confirmed at this time. It's unknown when the results will be available.

"Although it is unlikely that this person was infected with the 2019 novel coronavirus, we are conducting testing out of an abundance of caution", said Dr. Zack Moore, State Epidemiologist.

"This is all very reassuring as far as infection risk to the general public", Arwady said. Close contacts are deemed to be anyone who was within 6ft (2m) of the patient.

People who were at RDU or the hospital at the same time as the person was there are not considered at risk for infection.

Another 63 people in 22 states are being investigated as possible coronavirus patients.

"We may see more mild cases as the surveillance intensifies", World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said Friday in Geneva. However, medics are on alert for anyone who has traveled to Wuhan and shows flu-like symptoms.

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that range in severity from the common cold to the more deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which caused more than 700 deaths in a 2002-2003 outbreak. MI is at a low risk now, but she recommends frequently washing hands, covering coughs and taking other precautions similar to flu prevention.
