The teardown was done on the Google Phone app version 43.0.289191107 on a Pixel 4. One of the features of that alternative dialer app was, you guessed it, call recording. The button to start call recording, for example, is noted to still be hidden and the functionality is most likely not yet present anyway. While the Google Phone app offers several unique features such as spam protection, mini call view and caller ID, it lacks the call recording feature that is available in several other dialer apps.

Google could be working on creating a more proper API for OEMs to hook into to provide call recording functionality of their own. A clear indicator or notice when a call is being recorded could already go a long way in warning users should they be caught unaware.

When Xiaomi smartphones in Europe switched to the Google Phone app, some of their users complained that unlike their previous MIUI dialer app, this one had no call recording. Although Android 10 was the last promised update for the Pixel 2, it's possible from this continued support and the expectation set by the Pixel (2016) that Google continues to support it with additions like this, at least until the end of 2020.

This could also put the club at risk of losing its position as the Premier League's highest revenue generating club for the first time.

Some users have of course found workarounds. Call recording hasn't been possible on stock Android versions without rooting since Android 8 Oreo.

Currently, there is no official word from Google as to when users might see this, but there is speculation that the feature may only be for Xiaomi devices. Google is also reportedly planning to bring back call recording APIs but that's still for a future Android major update.
