Passenger who arrived at LAX tested due to concerns about lethal coronavirus

The person, who was traveling with relatives, had flu-like symptoms and was sent for testing.

The person landed around 6:30 p.m on Wednesday night.

The situation was treated the same as any other health emergency, he said. They recommended that the person be taken to a hospital and an ambulance arrived, LAX spokesperson/ Heath Montgomery told the Los Angeles Times.

On Saturday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began conducting health screenings of passengers arriving at LAX from China in response to the coronavirus outbreak. The first US case was confirmed on January 21 in a Washington man in his 30s who traveled from Wuhan, The Washington Post reported. After an NBC reporter claimed that the person was "quarantined at the airport after showing symptoms of contagious and unsafe coronavirus", the airport stated on social media: "This is not the information provided by the airport". The coronavirus that has sickened hundreds and killed nine people in China, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

Officials stress there have been no local case of the China-based coronavirus, but insisted the county is prepared to respond to any cases.

"A significant number of resources in Los Angeles County are focused on overall public health protection", said Barbara Ferrer, director of the Department of Public Health. We will keep everyone informed as more information becomes available.

Symptoms of the virus include a fever, difficulty breathing and coughing, but authorities haven't said which the traveler was displaying. The passenger, who was traveling with family members, will undergo a medical assessment, authorities said.
