Gartner's major Analyst make CEDAW said that in 2011 for the first time since the PC market has recorded an increase of is. The decline in Mac shipments comes at a time where overall PC shipments were actually up for the first time in seven years, seeing growth of 2.3% year-over-year, and 0.6% for all of 2019.

Interestingly enough, Mac sales in Q4 declined 5.3 percent year-over-year, as per IDC.

IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani said the coming year to 18 months could be challenging partly because the majority of Windows 10 upgrades will be completed, even as component shortages continue.

Lenovo retained top position, ending 2019 with a market share of 24.3 percent. "Without this shortage, shipments would have grown faster than the reported results", Kitagawa added.

"The continued business push specifically helped the top 3 players-Lenovo, HP, and Dell-to further consolidate their hold on the market with a combined share of just over 65 percent in 2019", the research firm said. The company with 17.4% market share witnessed the maximum growth rate of 10.7% among all PC vendors, going by IDC. It is however facing aggressive competition from Lenovo and Dell.

PC makers sold 264 million units in all of 2019, according to data collected by Gartner and IDC, a gain of 1.9 percent year-over-year. That's despite decent growth for PCs, which enjoyed the highest single-quarter shipment volume in four years during Q4.

That said, if you're running Windows 10, you will be receiving the new Edge as an update, at some point in the next few months. If you're exhausted of Chrome or are simply looking for something a little bit different, Edge might be exactly what you need.

While the PC market in the U.S. grew 4.6%, EMEA 3.6% in the fourth quarter of FY19, the shipments in Asia Pacific (APAC) region declined 6.1% annually to 22 million units. In 2011, vendors shipped 352 million PCs.

"The relatively stable economic conditions in the US compared with previous quarters, coupled with the end of Windows 7 support, loosened up spending on PCs", says Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner said in a press statement. In the US alone, Lenovo's desktop PC shipments rose more than 30 per cent compared with a year ago.

Both market researchers cited the Windows 10 upgrade as the reason for the turnaround.

With corporate upgrades expected to taper off this year, PC makers have searched for ways to shake up a market that has stagnated for years.

Both firms point toward the end of Windows 7 support as a contributing factor for PC market growth. IDC's data suggests Apple shipped 4.72 million Macs in Q4 2019, down from 4.98 million in the year-ago quarter.
