But they explained that a recent rapid spike in officially reported cases in China indicates that detection and reporting has been "substantially enhanced in recent days".

Chinese officials on Thursday effectively placed three cities - including Wuhan, where the outbreak began - on lockdown.

Adhanom said the worldwide organization remains concerned about the outbreak in China, and understands that some in the region of the country that has been particularly affected already consider it a health emergency.

The city government said it would call off events including temple fairs - which have attracted massive crowds of tourists in past years - urging citizens "to strengthen prevention and support".

During a news conference in Geneva, Houssin suggested that China's view of the outbreak was a factor in Thursday's decision. Major airports are screening worldwide arrivals travelling from China, in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease.

All the patients had respiratory symptoms and had been in Wuhan, thought to be the source, in the last 14 days.

China's coronavirus is spreading fast, with cases rising "by the minute".

It said seven hospitals are being "fully utilised" with 3,000 beds set aside to treat suspected and confirmed cases.

The US, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan have all confirmed cases, while four suspected sufferers are being tested in Scotland.

"There are no guarantees of success, but we hope this work could provide a significant and important step forward in developing a vaccine for this disease".

Public transit has been suspended and public venues have been closed in three cities in China; Jonathan Serrie reports.

Since then, sick travelers from Wuhan have infected people in China and other countries, including the United States.

Authorities in China reported on Thursday the first death outside of Hubei, the central province where a new SARS-like virus epidemic is believed to have originated.

Countries have already increased efforts to stop the spread of the pathogen - known by its technical name 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) - with thermal screening of all passengers arriving from China at airports in a number of countries.
