The patient recently traveled from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak is believed to have originated, according to the Orange County Health Agency.

One victim was a doctor, Liang Wudong, 62, who fell ill last week in Wuhan and died Saturday morning, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The virus that likely began in December in a now-closed seafood market in the city of Wuhan, has spread to every province in China, except remote autonomous regions of Qinghai and Tibet. Outside China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Macao, Hong Kong, France, Australia and the United States have reported confirmed cases of the new coronavirus strain, and there are media reports of a new case in Canada. Most schools are off next week, and Lam said they would not re-open until February 17. Flights from Wuhan to Hong Kong have only been halted since Thursday, when Wuhan was locked down by local authorities.

As Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a public warning Saturday of "serious" concerns over the deadly coronavirus outbreak, officials in the epicenter of Wuhan scrambled for more beds amid chaos at local hospitals, with the effects rippling across China and beyond.

Buzyn said she had no information yet on the second case, in Paris, which had just been confirmed. The city is a major transportation hub in China, with trains that run throughout the country, and an worldwide airport.

Chinese health authorities announced Sunday that 1,975 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), including 324 in critical conditions, had been reported in the country by the end of Saturday.

The consulate estimates there are roughly 1,000 American citizens in Wuhan, and is reaching out to them to offer them a seat on the plane, the Journal said.

The Snohomish County man who has the United States' first known case of the virus returned to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on January 15 after traveling solo in Wuhan since November.
