Amazon's Ring Now Requires Two-Factor Authentication

Ring two form factor authentication

Users of the Ring video doorbell are likely seeing a new update from the company that seeks to update and improve the device's security.

Google announced recently that it will force users to use two factor authentication (2FA) on all Nest products from this Spring and now it seems that Ring are following on from that but are starting today.

Till now, enabling the two-issue authentication in Ring units was non-compulsory, which positively would have prevented most Ring hacks, however, after all, many by no means bothered to allow it. After signing in with a username and password the app will ask to send a text message or email with a one-time six-digit code. This applies to any user shared in an account, Ring said. Once enabled, users or customers need more than just passwords to access their accounts. That's what makes 2FA a good backup: even if your login gets stolen, and even if you've reused those credentials, a hacker still has to have access to your second factor - for example, your phone or your email, where you receive a one-time code to plug in as additional authentication - in order to log in to your account. After you've entered the code, you'll be able to access the app and view footage from your outdoor and indoor cameras.

The company says the changes will be rolling out starting today, and that all Ring users should have access to them in the coming week.

Additionally, the company says it will be keeping another new security feature implemented in December that alerts users every time someone tries to log in to their account.

United Kingdom to close borders to unskilled and non-English speaking workers
Under the plans, workers who don't have the equivalent of A-levels or Scottish Highers will no longer get visas. Student visa applicants will also have to face the UK's new points-based system from next year.

Aside from looking to address problems with illegitimate logins using 2FA, Amazon's Ring division also opted to make some other changes effective immediately. You can also opt out of the personalised advertising - ie. stop Ring sharing your information with third-party service providers for the goal of receiving personalised ads. Among the most recent of those, Ring's doorbells were recently found to be leaking data to Facebook and other companies without user consent or knowledge.

Last month, the Electronic Frontier Foundation published a study showing Ring was sharing personally identifiable information with third-party analytics firms - something Ring did not disclose to its customers. It's introducing a new option for users to opt-out of personalized ads on the platform as well.

Ring also announced that, "beginning this week", it will allow customers to opt out of "sharing [their] information with third-party service providers for the objective of receiving personalized ads".

"Although we believe personalized advertising can deliver a better customer experience, beginning this week we will provide you with a choice to opt-out in Control Center".
