The vote comes after the European Commission announced last summer that it was considering "other options" to force Apple to use a common charging standard.

However, while the European Union has voted to move forward with its plan to create a standard charging adaptor, legislators have not decided exactly on what form this new charger will take, and are hoping to have new guidelines in place by July. The company argued against a common charger saying that it will stifle innovation and inadvertently create e-waste as existing Lightning chargers and cables are swapped out for USB-C, the preferred common standard.

The European Commission, which acts as the executive for the EU, has been pushing for a common charger for more than a decade.

In Apple believe that the rule is harmful to innovation.

On the other hand, Android smartphone makers won't get affected too much, because most of their flagship phones are using the same USB-C charger. The legislature said that using the same charger like USB-C for all electronic devices could reduce the amount of electronic waste. Lawmakers didn't specify what charging standard manufacturers should adopt in Thursday's resolution.

Donald Trump's Economy: 2019 Advance Estimate Is In
Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of economic activity, slowed to an annual gain of 1.8% in the fourth quarter. However, this estimate may be too high given the December recovery in imports reported in yesterday's data.

While, in Europe in 2016, the figure for total e-waste generated was 12.3 million metric tonnes, equivalent to 16.6 kg on average per inhabitant - with the parliament asserting this represents "an unnecessary environmental footprint that can be reduced".

Meanwhile Apple has worked around previous EU attempts to push device makers to standardize charging on Micro USB by expanding its revenue-generating dongle collection - and selling Europeans a Lighting to Micro USB adaptor.

Apple claims that the legislation would have a negative impact and increase the volume of electronic waste and also cause inconvenience to users. In addition to approving the rule of common chargers, Parliament has asked to improve cable recycling facilities and better compatibility with wireless chargers.

The idea behind the move is to "decouple" the sale of a charger from that of a new mobile device, and instead encourage consumers to re-use those they already own. Or extract obsolete the devices and accessories which are used by several million people of Europe and hundreds of millions of Apple consumers from all over the world.

If Parliament is successful, the Commission will take measures to ensure the interoperability of different wireless charges with different mobile devices.
